V.I.N. decoding

1. What does V.I.N. means ?

The acronym V.I.N. stands for "Vehicle Identification Number". It comes with a barcode for fast identification via a computer, by a Chevrolet tech. This feature is highly reliable, because you need to unmount the windshield to access it. On other cars, this number appears on a plate under the hood or is engraved in the chassis. You don't have to etch your windows anymore.

2. What is it made for ?

The V.I.N. identifies a car without any doubt, and it provides some basic information about the car (year of making, engine...). You will need it to order parts for your car, too.

3. Where is it located?

On 4th gen Camaros, it is placed at the bottom of the windshield, driver side.

4. Decoding chart

You can read the V.I.N. in the left row, from top to bottom. The number shown is a template for a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro with V6 engine.
